There are times when the odds seem so ridiculously stacked against you. This may be one of those times. It’s a “Mission: Impossible” moment. A David versus Goliath affair. An “Abandon all hope, ye who enter” Dante’s Inferno scenario. Yet, Palermo will set out against Juventus on Sunday to achieve the inconceivable. Juventus are playing for a Scudetto celebration in front of their home fans on a date that carries historical significance to their supporters, while Palermo are playing for a chance to stay in the same league next season.
Much can be said about the game but why bother? Everyone is aware of the superiority of this Juventus team and the subsequent failings of the Rosanero this season. Yet, Sannino has already pushed this team to limits they didn’t even know existed a month ago. There are four games left to pull off the miracle and the way Palermo has been playing has underlined the fact that they have confidence in themselves once again. Nobody is expecting anything from the pink and black tomorrow, but a point would be just as precious as a win. They make you play these games for a reason.
The press has hinted at some possible changes to the starting XI for Sannino. The list of players who are one yellow away from suspension is substantial: Barreto, Donati, Garcia, Ilicic, Kurtic, Miccoli. Some outlets are saying that the red-hot Ilicic might even begin the match on the bench to prevent him from injury or a caution that would prevent him from participating in the crucial mid-week encounter versus Udinese. And the ideas didn’t stop there. Others have suggested even Faurlin would be trotted out in place of Kurtic. So, don’t be surprised if what we see lining up before the starting whistle is something completely different than what’s mentioned down below. One thing is clear: don’t expect Sannino to just roll over for Juventus. That’s just not his style.
