The Biggest Derby of Them All: Catania – Palermo

The Derby della Sicilia has not had this much importance in a long time. This year, this time, there are precious points on the line for both teams. Both sides are on the out, looking in. Catania are attempting to qualify for a spot at European football; meanwhile, Palermo are trying to desperately stave off relegation, two points away from safety.

The situation is grim for the Rosanero. The club plays on the road at the Massimino where they have not even scored a goal since December 2, 2007 and where their last win occurred on that fateful game in February of 2007. To make matters worse, Fabrizio Miccoli was not called up due to injury and Ilicic, while available and starting, isn’t at 100%. Sannino will need a monumental performance from the lads in order to maintain pace with the fellow relegation battlers. With Genoa slipping up with a 1-1 draw against Atalanta on Saturday, Palermo have an opportunity to overtake them and possibly Siena, pending the outcome of Sunday’s fixtures.

To even be in this position was unthinkable a few weeks ago, and yet, here Palermo is. Amuni, picciotti! Forza Palermo!
