Safety First: Cesena – Palermo

Palermo are gearing up for a torrid run of four games in the next ten days. While the Rosanero have reached the 40 point mark, they are not exactly “safe” from relegation. Granted, it would take a stupendous collapse, but with four games coming in rapid succession, a win on Sunday would all but insure safety for Palermo in Serie A next season.

Cesena are dead last in the table, sitting on only 21 points. With only six games remaining, they need a legitimate miracle to survive. Despite having the odds stacked against them, last season’s Cinderella will want to rack up as many wins as possible before returning to Serie B. Sure, the club only has 21 points, but three of those came against Palermo at the Renzo Barbera. It’s been a disappointing championship for a team that made big moves over the summer and winter transfer windows.

Probable Lineup

Viviano
Munoz – Silvestre – Mantovani
Pisano – Vazquez – Donati – Della Rocca – Bertolo
Abel – Miccoli

Bench: Tzorvas; Labrin; Acquah, Bacinovic, Zahavi; Budan, Mehmeti

Silvestre makes a return to the playing field after a lengthy absence. Unfortunately, Balzaretti, Migliaccio and Aguirregaray were not called up due to injuries. Ilicic doesn’t make the trip either due to yellow card accumulation. Meanwhile, Eros Pisano was called up, but he’s also dealing with an injury, so he may not feature.

The injuries leave Palermo without any fullbacks, so Mutti will most likely opt for a 3-5-2. The good news is that Sunday’s match should provide Vazquez with a start and a showcase to exhibit his skills – something he hasn’t been able to do since early February. Up top, all signs point to a Abel Hernandez and Miccoli pairing.

  1. Dont understand where Milanovic is. he was our best defender in the games he played, but instead, theres Munoz.

    also, goal Palermo! Bertolo! :D

I don’t want to see Hernandez in the next match. He is useless. He can’t score a goal and isn’t able to pass, selfish player. I would like to see Budan.

  3. We had some good momentum going in that match and it really was ours for the taking. But when Mutti decided to take off Hernandez and replace him with Bacinovic it was clear the foot was taken off the pedal. Had he installed Budan earlier I truly think we would have won it.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching Vazquez too. He was so assured on the ball. Made some great passes and caused problems up front for Cesena. On top of that he even made some good tackles to help out the defence. I like this guy heaps.

    • Same here, think he was trying a bit TOO hard to impress though. saw some moments when a pass was possible but he tried doing it all himself. not saying hes selfish, but perhaps a bit too over zealous today. MUCH better then Ilicic has been.

  4. Yeah i watched it on a tiny Bet 365 screen too, I thought Bertolo had a good game and was unlucky with that last effort right at the death. Vazquez does look like a bit of a gem. i know Abel didnt have a good game but hes really not got his match sharpness back yet after a stop and start season. Lets hope he has a full preseason and can go into next season fully fit and able to have a run of games. And my oh my lets get rid of Munoz but we NEED to keep silvestre. Hes class. (p.s. how good was it when Mutu was booked for diving, best part of the game)

I think Munoz didnt have that bad of a game yesterday. none of the two goals were his fault and he came out with a brilliant assist. he was also dangerous in the air.

  6. the assist was crazy, maybe thats just it, hes not a defender???? The goals werent his fault agreed, i think i have a bee in my bonnet with him tbh. I was infuriated to not see Milanovic in the team
